The Plateau has a rhythm that's hard to clock if you're only passing through, but if you book one of its best hotels, you’ll start to see how life here unfolds: For example, at dawn, people are stumbling home from a night out at the same time others are heading out for a run; then there are the bohemian types holding out and keeping the area weird while more austere and cool types run chi-chi shops. Coexisting overlaps like those, that particular combination of energies and tensions, is exactly what you miss when you're staying somewhere else.
Spending a night or two here changes the experience entirely. Located near some amazing bars and restaurants, these nine hotels offer everything from the spare and minimal to full-on eclectic, but they’re all unified in putting you inside one of the city's most alive neighbourhoods.
Within the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ), one of Canada’s leading institutions for tourism, hospitality, and restaurant services, is Hôtel de l’ITHQ. A sort of teaching-hotel, where 300 ITHQ students learn their trades, and guests benefit from their services, and profits are invested back into training for students.
With contemporary fixtures and light wood furnishings, the hotel offers five room-types, free wifi and complementary breakfasts. The premises also have two restaurants and a bar, free parking, concierge services, and are right beside the Sherbrooke metro station. The hotel is free for children 12 and under, so it’s a good option for families with younger travellers.
Auberge de La Fontaine is a 21-room boutique hotel in the heart of the plateau, across from La Fontaine park. Their rooms are rustic and homey, many possessing exposed brick walls, and can fit anywhere from one to six people. Keeping in mind those visiting for both corporate purposes and pleasure, most rooms have a work station. They offer free wifi, parking for $9, an on-site concierge, and breakfast for an additional fee. And, in such a coveted location, Auberge de La Fontaine is close to plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops.
A small, charming boutique hotel situated parallel to Square Saint-Louis, Kutuma welcomes guests to an African-inspired environment, full of earth-tones, animal prints, and the occasional region-specific plant. They have five kinds of rooms, ranging from Queen Superior to Penthouse Suite, free wifi, concierge, room service, valet service and breakfast for an extra charge, and an on-site Ethiopian restaurant. Though they offer a range of amenities and room sizes, those with mobility issues may want to stay elsewhere, as the hotel lacks an elevator.
In a white brick building with wooden doors and intricate railings—quintessential plateau architecture—is Chez Francois, a Bed and Breakfast situated in an old residential building across from La Fontaine Park. Their rooms are understated but functional, with free wifi, air conditioning, and daily housekeeping. Access to the spa’s thermal circuit, with bathrobes and sandals, is included for stays of 5 nights or more, where guests can rotate through a hot bath, ice bath, steam room, dry sauna, and relaxation area—they also offer several different kinds of massages. They also offer a variety of discounts, including 10% off if you book 30 days in advance.
Hotel St-Thomas is located on the border of the Plateau and downtown, giving guests easy access to two of the city’s most bustling neighbourhoods. They house 23 rooms, offer a personalized concierge service, and an app to chat with the staff. With ornate wallpaper, leather beds, and geometric floors, Hotel St-Thomas conveys a sense of eclectic, metropolitan charm, not unlike the Plateau itself. Their version of the hotel bar, the Salon Thomas, is a cafe by-day, serving breakfast each morning, and lounge by-night, open until midnight. Hotel guests also have complimentary access to their fitness center in Espace Thomas, the hotel’s annex.
Château de l’Argoat is is a hotel that channels the dynamism and diversity of the Plateau into each of its 25 rooms, all decorated differently, some with brightly coloured walls and patterned throw pillows, others with stately dark wood cladding and airy canopies. They vary in prices, too, satisfying a range of different budgets and needs. Amenities include free parking, Wifi, and self-service breakfast with coffee, tea, breads, fruit, yogurt, juice, and more. Plus, they’re close to Saint-Denis, so guests have easy access to the street’s many shops and restaurants.
HOTEL10, bordering downtown and the plateau, is a boutique hotel with a funky, contemporary style. The rooms are sleek, and practical with ample outlets, desk space, and large bathrooms. Their suites maximize luxury—some follow decorative themes, including jazz and sports, while others adhere to more traditional suite expectations, with multiple rooms, soaker tubs, and vast views of the city. Also on the premises is a 24-hour fitness center; car rental service; wine bar, serving small bites and drinks; and breakfast buffet that has local and seasonal selections.
Just above the live music bar Casa del Popolo and its sister bar La Sala Rossa, Pensione Popolo is the family’s latest addition, and has seven rooms. Rooms are modestly sized with one to two beds, and a small desk, but the rates more than make up for that, ranging affordably from $100-$150 (excluding taxes) per night. The space quietly reflects the rustic simplicity of both nightlife venues, in its minimal decoration and homey feel, and if guests have an itch to dance or listen to music, all they have to do is head downstairs.
