Belle Afrique

Resto Belle Afrique is a casual Montréal-Nord spot run by chef-owner Setope Hounkpati, who trained at École hôtelière Calixa-Lavallée after arriving from Togo in 2018.
The restaurant went viral on TikTok in spring 2024 when videos of customers eating fufu sauce graine caught enough attention to bring in François Legault, among many others. The fufu sauce graine, the dish that put the restaurant on the map, is manioc or plantain dough served with beef in a palm nut sauce.
The broader menu spans West African and Haitian cooking: attiéké with fish and alloco, dokonu (a corn and cassava paste with tomato sauce), sauce gombo with crab and palm oil, fufu with peanut sauce, riz orange, and riz collé with griot. House-made bissap and ginger juice are on the drinks list. Plates are served on wooden boards shaped like the African continent.
