In case the end of the world didn’t already feel close, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die makes it feel inevitable. Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, Rango) returns after a nine-year absence with a film that is overstuffed, overlong, and chaotic, and yet still strangely compelling. I can smell a cult film in the making: It’s not a crowd-pleasing blockbuster, but something messier, riskier, and far more interesting.
In this science fiction action-comedy, a man from the future (Sam Rockwell) travels to the past to recruit a group of ordinary civilians to fight a rogue artificial intelligence. Rockwell is perfectly cast, bringing a manic, unpredictable energy to the role that feels like it could combust at any moment, yet still finds moments of sincerity.
