BENELUX (Verdun)

Benelux landed on Wellington Street in 2013 by exploiting a quiet loophole: while Verdun's long-standing dry laws barred traditional bars, a microbrewery selling its own beer was another matter. The workaround gave the neighbourhood its first proper drinking establishment in over a century, and the space has been a fixture ever since. Set inside a former bank whose original vault and early-1900s ceiling survive intact, the room was designed by Braun-Braën to balance the bones of the building against something cleaner and more contemporary: brushed steel, wood, industrial touches kept in check. In warmer months, a 180-seat terrace takes over the sidewalk. The beer list is the main event, driven by brewmaster Teklad "Tico" Pavisian, whose rotating taps run from witbier and West Coast IPAs to imperial stouts aged in bourbon barrels. EuroDogs, paninis, and charcuterie boards round out the offer.
