"Lufa Farms is redefining what it means to grow food in a city. Since launching the world’s largest rooftop greenhouse in Ville Saint-Laurent in 2020—nearly three football fields of hydroponic produce—the Montreal-based company has doubled its output and bolstered its vision: a self-sustaining, hyper-local food ecosystem. Their model combines high-tech greenhouse farming with a curated online marketplace of partner farms and producers, offering everything from leafy greens to Quebec honey, delivered by electric vehicle or local dépanneur drop point.

More than just a grocer, Lufa is building infrastructure for urban resilience. Their greenhouses reduce heat island effects, their food baskets support hundreds of local families through a direct-giving program, and their transparent supply chains aim to reconnect people with the origins of their food. At present, they feed about 2% of the city—but they’ve done the math. If just 19 more shopping-centre rooftops went green, Montreal could meet all its own vegetable needs. It’s not a fantasy. It’s a blueprint."
