Marché Castel

Owner Kamereddine Bensalem and his son Abdelbari run this specialty grocer with a direct line to Algeria — fruits, vegetables, and products shipped over weekly, including several grades of dates that are difficult to find even in Algeria itself. The shop's reputation has spread well beyond Montreal, drawing customers from Toronto and the United States looking for a taste of home. But the family sees itself as rooted in Quebec too, and regularly hosts community events — including a spread for the Amazigh New Year — that open the store's culture to neighbours of all backgrounds.
