Lululemon prepares to open a two-level flagship downtown

The athletic apparel giant is betting big on downtown with a massive two-storey store at a key intersection of the city's retail scene.

Construction signage has gone up at the northeast corner of Ste-Catherine West and Peel, confirming that Lululemon has secured the high-profile retail space for a new Montreal flagship. The Vancouver-based athletic brand is moving into roughly 12,000 square feet spread across two floors at 1035 Ste-Catherine W.—the address that's been empty since American Eagle left during the pandemic.

The store is set to become one of Lululemon's biggest in Canada, following the brand's sprawling three-storey Toronto location that launched at Yonge and Bloor last spring. Montreal's version will sit in the retail podium of the Marine Building, a mixed-use tower from 1989 that links directly to Peel Metro and the Underground City.

For downtown, it's another signal that the retail corridor is bouncing back. Sainte-Catherine has seen office workers return, tourists reappear, and a wave of brands either opening or expanding over the last couple of years. The Peel corner gets constant foot traffic, has windows that wrap the intersection, and offers sightlines from every approach—factors that have long made a desirable retail location in the city.

Lululemon already runs several Montreal stores, including locations on Sainte-Catherine near McGill College and in Westmount. This flagship represents a major bet on the city, bringing the kind of large, design-focused retail environment the company has been building in key urban centres.
