M for Montreal is where the world hears it all first

When the fallen leaves and greyness of November’s liminality has returned, Montrealers start seeking warmth in the low-lit respites of venues across town—just in time for festivals like M For Montreal, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025.

Unlike Jazz Fest or Osheaga which draw in crowds from all over, the unassuming M for Montreal festival distinguishes itself by attracting crowds of concert-goers that will sooner find their place in the grime of Foufs and don’t mind the smell of spilt beer on their worn-in leather. These are the crowds that show up for the pure love of music and supporting local artists; they’re also why a festival such as M for Montreal has lasted, fuelled by the thrill of discovery rather than spectacle.
