Jean-Paul-Riopelle Place

Created in 2004 over the Ville-Marie Expressway, Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle sits in the Quartier international, bordered by the Palais des congrès to the east and the InterContinental Hotel to the south. Its centrepiece is La Joute, a 1969 Riopelle bronze ensemble of thirty mythical and animal figures gathered around a central fountain: owl, bear, fish, dog, among others. Originally installed at the Olympic Park for the 1976 Games, the work was relocated here amid considerable controversy, with Hochelaga-Maisonneuve residents arguing the move stripped it of its sporting context. The square's eighty-eight trees, planted in a pattern evoking circuit boards, serve as staging ground for La Joute's evening show, which runs from mid-May to mid-October: mist rises from gutters at ground level, culminating in a ring of fire above the water surface. Performances run 35 minutes, on the hour from 17h35 to 22h35.
