Maquis Yasolo

Solange Pati and Alain Tanoh opened Maquis Yasolo on Notre-Dame West in late 2019 as an extension of Aliments Yasolo, their specialty grocery next door. The restaurant calls itself Afro-Québécois, a label that fits: the menu spans West and Central African cooking, principally Ivorian and Congolese, with Caribbean and Haitian touches woven in. Dishes include poulet braisé marinated 24 hours in African spices and grilled over charcoal, served with attiéké (Ivorian cassava couscous) and house hot sauce; thiéboudienne, the Senegalese rice and fish staple; mafé, a slow-cooked peanut stew; ndolé aux crevettes from Cameroon; and ntaba, a well-marinated grilled goat served with chikwanga, yucca, or plantains. The space, which Tanoh restored himself, features exposed brick, a tin ceiling, a mural of Black historical figures, hanging work from local Black artists, and potted palms out front.
