Club Balattou

Club Balattou isn’t just a venue—it’s the foundation of Montréal’s world music scene. Open since 1985, this intimate Saint-Laurent Boulevard club has been the beating heart of African, Caribbean, and global sounds for nearly four decades. It’s where legends like Baaba Maal, Papa Wemba, and Ismaël Lô made their Montréal debut, and where Nuits d’Afrique—a festival that grew into one of the largest of its kind in North America—got its start.

Founded by Lamine Touré, Balattou has never been about exclusivity. The name itself means ball for all, and the philosophy has held firm: a space where tropical rhythms mix with folk, electronic influences blend with hip-hop, and where both emerging and established artists take the stage.
