Sts. Irene and St. Markella Greek Orthodox Church

The Church of St. Irene and St. Markella sits on a Mile End street that’s seen more than one community pass through its doors: Built in 1920 as the Tiffereth Israel Synagogue, the structure later became a Protestant place of worship before being re-established as a Greek Orthodox parish under Father Spyridon. That layered history mirrors the neighbourhood itself with shifting populations through the same streets, albeit with new meanings.

Today, the church operates under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Toronto, with services marking the liturgical calendar from weekly Divine Liturgy to major observances tied to Lent and Orthodox feast days. Named for St. Irene of Chrysovalantou and St. Markella of Chios, the parish remains active, drawing congregants from across the city. It’s a modest building with a long memory that continues to anchor a community that, while no longer concentrated in Mile End, still returns here with purpose.
