Founded in 1969, the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) was born from the ideals of Quebec’s Quiet Revolution—a public university designed to make higher education accessible to francophones and working-class communities. Located in the Quartier Latin and integrated with the Berri-UQAM metro hub, the campus grew around the preserved façade and steeple of the historic Saint-Jacques Church, now a city landmark.
Today, UQAM is one of Montreal’s most influential academic institutions, home to over 35,000 students and more than 350 programs across seven faculties. Known for its progressive values, interdisciplinary research, and deep cultural impact, the university has been a driving force in feminist scholarship, environmental studies, and creative innovation.
