How lucky are we to be alive at the same time as Earth, Wind & Fire?

That question kept roaming around my mind while watching Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s The Weight Of The World), Questlove’s latest love letter to musical greatness. Four music documentaries in, and I think it’s safe to say there isn’t anyone better suited for this job. His passion is infectious when he geeks out over artists who have stood the test of time, and that enthusiasm gives the film its heartbeat.

Questlove’s distinctive style as a documentarian explores the cultural and artistic forces that made the success of bands possible. His films are as interested in legacy as they are in biography, and that approach serves Earth, Wind & Fire particularly well: This is a group whose influence stretches far beyond record sales and topping the charts, and their music became a soundtrack for generations as it blends funk, soul, jazz, pop, and spirituality into something entirely their own.
