Véronique Garneau had a problem: The centrepiece of the collection she was designing for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens needed to move with the lightness, effortlessness, and near-weightlessness of a feather while being made of solid 14-karat gold. These two facts are, on the surface, incompatible. The solution she landed on says a lot about how she designs jewelry.
The collaboration between Garneau's Saint-Bruno-based studio Mona Fine Joaillerie and the Grands Ballets came together over two years, starting with what was meant to be a simple donation ask for a gala. Garneau, who specializes in custom-made jewellery, counter-proposed something bigger: a full collection inspired by the company's new production Le Lac, choreographer Ivan Cavallari's interpretation of Swan Lake. The Grands Ballets said yes, asked for more time to do it properly, and called back in October. By then, Garneau was already thinking about the shape and form it would take.
