As the last weeks of August draw beach attendance to a close and schools reopen, Montreal’s artistic presence amplifies. Boundary-pushing live music and immersive audiovisual shows, free public circuits of digital installations and workshops, talks and networking events—these are the forward-thinking pillars of MUTEK.
The idiosyncrasy of MUTEK
MUTEK has been acting as a pacemaker for the new age of sound, art, and technology for nearly thirty years. In that time, they’ve become one of Montreal’s most progressive institutions, built on artistic agency, valuing the avant-garde, and creating space for both emerging talents and renowned veterans who have evolved in international underground scenes.
The festival’s artists-first, progressive constitution emerges through each festival series: Nocturne, X/Visions, Métropolis, Play, and Expérience, where audio-visual interplay catalyzes community and gathering. You might hear techno, ambient, glitch, drone, jazz, or noise. Visuals are equally immersive, tightly synced to the music and motion-reactive on occasion.
Beyond the festival, MUTEK also includes a Forum (a sort of creative-tech conference-meets-lab) and the Village Numérique or 'Digital Village', a free outdoor circuit of installations that transforms the Quartier des Spectacles into a playground of digital art.
MUTEK doesn’t ask what technology can do, but what it should do, prioritizing audience introspection as artists bend it into something meaningful.

From Montreal to the World
Montreal is the mothership for MUTEK, which, since its founding in 2000, has grown into an international network known for blending homegrown innovation with global experimentation. Over the years, it's accumulated satellite editions in Mexico City, Barcelona, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Santiago, and Dubai.
MUTEK has supported over 1,100 artists in Montreal alone and hosted 2,500+ performances across 49 cities.
Who is MUTEK for?
- Electronic music fans: From ambient to bass, house to glitch—basically everything except the mainstream EDM circuit, and almost exclusively live
- Curious newcomers: Anyone seeking to expand their musical horizons
- Art & music nerds: If you live for modular synths or experimental visuals, you’ll find your people
- Designers, coders, creatives: The Forum is packed with ideas that travel beyond the stage
- Families: The Village Numérique and esplanade Tranquille are free, public, and stroller-friendly
- People who think they “don’t get” electronic music: This is the gateway. It’s not about names—it’s about experiencing it live
MUTEK Festival: The programming explained
MUTEK’s festival is divided into distinct programming streams, each with its own vibe, setting, and curatorial focus.
- Nocturne: Intimate indoor sets and large-scale, late-night, and/or high-sensation club nights, often leaning experimental at the SAT with visuals, energy, and room to move. Expect synths, sweat, fog, and surprise.
- X/Visions: A series of contemporary instrumental compositions (including three with a live organ) and avant-garde electronica performances, curated to align with the acoustics at Maison symphonique.
- Métropolis: The festival’s biggest party, filling MTELUS with high-energy live acts on Friday and Saturday night with dynamic sets from forward-thinking artists. Dance-focused, with a range of styles from post-punk to hypnotic techno.
- Play: Afternoon multimedia explorations of performance-driven narratives and images, rooted in contemporary sounds and visuals. Accessible and digestible for broad audiences.
- Expérience: Held outdoors at Esplanade Tranquille, this brings free shows to the public every evening from 5 pm—perfect for discovering something new under the sky. Open to all ages.
- Village Numérique: A digital art trail that transforms the Quartier des Spectacles into an interactive gallery. Indoors, outdoors, and mostly free.
MUTEK Forum: For the creatively curious
Running August 26–28, the Forum is where artists, researchers, technologists, and policy-makers meet to swap ideas. You don’t need to be a pro to attend, only curious.
Talks, masterclasses, workshops, and showcases all unfold across three themes
- Storytelling: Expanding Realities (Day 1): Immersive narratives and worldbuilding through sound and image.
- Technology: Future Interfaces (Day 2): Exploring new technologies that aid and shape creativity
- Sound: Collective Resonance (Day 3): Sonic practice as a collective and corporeal experience
Across three days, you'll hear from artists, researchers, technologists, and cultural practitioners pushing at the edges of their fields. These include Mindy Seu tracing the reciprocal relationship between sexuality and technological development in a Canadian premiere lecture-performance; Navid Navab, this year's Golden Nica recipient at Prix Ars Electronica, bringing his media alchemy to the stage; legendary Jamaican sound system builder Uncle Ronnie speaking to a lineage that shaped electronic music culture globally; and multidisciplinary artist Caroline Monnet discussing Indigenous storytelling and screen culture. That's before you get to panels on AI ethics, biosignals, quantum listening, and the sustainability of live music.
Running alongside the Forum, MUTEK Market returns in a significantly expanded format, connecting Québec and Canadian creative studios and export-ready artists with over 100 international delegates through curated 1:1 meetings, case studies, and industry cocktails. Confirmed delegates include the Barbican, the Getty, Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts, Art Dubai, and the New Museum, among many others. For studios and artists working in digital arts, immersive media, or music technology, it may be the most strategically valuable room in Montreal this year. The call for participation is open until July 30.
