Studio Botté makes lighting out of what Montreal throws away. Founder Philippe Charlebois-Gomez, an industrial designer who trained at lighting house Lambert & Fils, started collecting castoffs on his bike ride home before launching the studio in 2017; fan guards discarded by students became his signature material, and he's since amassed everything from stool bases and ski poles to globes salvaged from the streetlamps that lit Montreal during Expo 67. His Mile-Ex atelier doubles as what the team calls a matériauthèque, a library of reclaimed parts awaiting rewiring into one-of-a-kind fixtures, each stamped with his signature. The studio deliberately doesn't ship beyond 650 kilometres: clients are expected to visit, meet the maker, and leave with a story along with the lamp.
