Scala Santa Chapel

Completed in 1905 in the eastern neighbourhood of Pointe-aux-Trembles, the Chapelle de la Scala Santa is among the most architecturally distinctive religious buildings of its era in Montreal. Designed by Joseph Arthur Godin, a pioneer of reinforced concrete construction in Quebec, the chapel departs from the stylistic conventions of its time: a central dome ringed by six apsidioles gives the building an unusually complex, expressive massing. The chapel belongs to the Sanctuaire de la Réparation au Sacré-Coeur et de Padre Pio and takes its name from the tradition, originating in Rome, of replicating the staircase Christ ascended to Pilate's praetorium. A 2009 restoration by Rayside Labossière repaired the envelope in full, replacing the roof with tinned stainless steel to approximate the original zinc, recreating lost doors from archival photographs, and repairing the fragile stained glass windows with epoxy resin where original colours were no longer in production.
