The first beach in Montreal's east end, Plage de l'Est opened in 2021 on the St. Lawrence in Pointe-aux-Trembles, on the former site of the Beaudoin marina. Swimming isn't permitted (water quality and the protected habitat of the copper redhorse, a threatened fish, have kept it off-limits), but the site works as a riverside park: a pebble beach, a lit concrete promenade with an integrated splash pad, two beach volleyball courts, picnic areas, and a steel-and-wood jetty that extends over the river to a lookout. The pebble shore serves as a launch for kayaks and canoes, with rentals and guided outings offered in season, and the site connects to paddling routes through the Hochelaga archipelago. Digs here have turned up some 12,000 artifacts tracing Indigenous presence back more than 2,000 years.
