Saint-Jean-Baptiste runs the block between Henri-Julien and Drolet with its façade on Rachel, seating roughly 2,500, the largest church in Montreal after Notre-Dame and Saint Joseph's Oratory. The parish dates to the 1870s, but the building is the third on the site. Fire took the second in 1898, and lightning gutted its replacement in June 1911, two days after a new Casavant organ was inaugurated. Casimir Saint-Jean's reconstruction set the current form: a neo-Renaissance front carrying Christ and the four evangelists on the pediment, a neo-baroque interior of moulded plaster, carved pews and original chandeliers, and Nincheri stained glass added in 1932. Two Casavant organs are still in use. A 1967 plan to strip the main altar and balustrade collapsed when the curé told the contractor the parish had no money to pay him. Concerts are held there regularly.
