Parc du Portugal

About

Parc du Portugal may be small, but it carries the weight of a whole community’s story. Established in 1953, the square at Saint-Laurent and Marie-Anne honours the wave of Portuguese immigrants who made the Plateau their home. At its centre, a tiled fountain designed by artist Rui Diaz—later restored in 2017 by Sol Labos Brien—reflects a tradition of azulejos that rarely makes it this far north. The park’s gates and gazebo are dressed in ceramic work too, lending colour against the concrete stretch of the Main. Designed by landscape architect Carlos R. Martinez, it’s as much a cultural marker as it is a resting spot.
