Terraza Luz is Alma’s summertime alter ego, a weekend taquería tucked into a back lane in Outremont. Open from May through October, it’s run by chef Juan Lopez Luna and sommelier Lindsay Brennan as a more casual counterpart to their acclaimed restaurant. The focus is on tortillas—pressed to order from heritage corn imported from Tlaxcala and Oaxaca, nixtamalized and milled in-house each morning. Over the wood fire, Lopez Luna and his team turn out three taco varieties that change weekly, from cochinita pibil to battered fish or cactus with beans, each served hot off the comal. Drinks lean easy and refreshing—margaritas, mezcal cocktails, local beer, and natural wine—while desserts come from pastry chef Mariana Martin of Carlota.
With only twenty seats and no reservations, lines form early, but the festive, laneway setting is part of the draw. Terraza Luz is as much a neighbourhood hangout as it is a taste of Mexico City streets.
