The Main X URBANIA : Un Guide Décalé de Montréal (Volume 2)

Notre guide décalé de collaboration est de retour pour un deuxième tour, cette fois en creusant au-delà des lieux fréquentés par les habitants et en explorant comment la ville fonctionne réellement, et de qui elle est composée.

The Main x URBANIA : Un guide décalé de Montréal (Volume 2)

When URBANIA and The Main first came together to create a Micromag last year, the result was a whirlwind day-in-the-life tour of the city's side streets and late-night counters. A year later, we're back with a hors série edition of the Micromag, and this time, the itinerary goes inward.

Volume two is less about where to go than what you'd know if you'd been here all along: Why does every address plate in the city point the wrong way? Which hat shop invented the hat trick? Who's packing dancefloors in photo studios and legal graffiti tunnels while the clubs sit half-empty? What does it do to a person to grow up between three languages and get complimented on their accent in their hometown?

You'll find newcomers alongside centenarians in this issue: restaurants and bars of the 2025-26 class share space with a bagel oven that's been burning since 1919, while Gen Z with a vintage obsession sit next to flea market vendors who saw their fixations for a long time coming.

Add a self-scoring Montrealer test, a rundown of summer's essential events, an anti-guide to its tourist traps, and a weekend itinerary from an editor who'd usually rather be in the woods, and you've got a full picture of the city drawn, as always, from both sides of its cultural coin.

Here's what's inside, starting with recommendations from local author Arizona O’Neill and singer-songwriter and actress Claudia Bouvette.

The Vintage Scene Has Gone Mainstream, and Business Has Never Been Better

An octogenarian flea market vendor is having her best year ever, and Gen Z is the reason. Veterans of Montreal's secondhand trade on the boom that's reshaping everything from rockabilly boutiques to vinyl collecting, and why the real treasures are getting harder to find than ever.

What’s It Mean to Be a Bill 101 Kid?

Nearly 50 years after Quebec's French-language charter transformed education, the multilingual generation it produced—borough mayors, filmmakers, professors—is challenging archaic ideas of what a Quebecer is supposed to look and sound like.

Meet the Class of 2025-26: Can't-Miss New Restaurants and Bars of Montreal

From a Little Italy bistro that already feels decades old to the city's first proper German beer hall since 1995, these are the newcomers that understand exactly what their neighbourhoods need right now with honest food and drink and no pretense.
