Blatter & Blatter Pipes

Blatter & Blatter has been making pipes in Montreal since 1907, when Frédéric Blatter founded the business after years of pipemaking in England and South Africa. Five generations on, it remains family-run, with Robert Blatter and his nephew Patrick carving briar by hand in a workshop behind the shop. The house style favours classic shapes and clean grain over ornament, offered in smooth, sandblast, and hand-rusticated finishes, each marked with the Blatter red dot; an exceptional piece earns a second. The pipes are cut from imported Mediterranean briar, and the shop sells its own tobacco blends and cigars alongside them, with repairs and cleaning done on site on equipment that is in some cases more than a century old. Once one of several such makers in the city, it is now the last pipemaker in Montreal, working downtown on President-Kennedy Avenue near Place des Arts.
