Divan Orange

About
Le Divan Orange ran for 13 years at Saint-Laurent and Rachel, a worker co-op named for the orange couch parked by the door next to a piano. The room held 150 people, which gave promoters a stage sized between Casa del Popolo and Sala Rossa, and it drew a new generation of francophone bands to a strip long dominated by anglophone rooms. Patrick Watson, Coeur de Pirate and Plants and Animals played early shows there, as did Claire Boucher before she was Grimes. Afternoons it ran as a café with a vegetarian kitchen and a new show of emerging artists on the walls each month. It closed in March 2018 after more than 10,000 performances, undone by rising rent, an upstairs neighbour who called police 85 times in two months, and a legal status, bar with a performance permit, that blocked it from public arts funding.
