Marché Losako

About
Marché Losako is a Congolese grocery in Hochelaga, the kind of compact neighbourhood market where the shelves do a lot of work. The stock centres on Central and West African staples: fresh cassava, safou (a rich, tart fruit sometimes called African plum), fumbwa leaves, spices, honey, and house ginger juice, with products serving Cameroonian shoppers as well as the Congolese community. Prepared food comes out of the back, including fried fish and pondu, the Congolese cassava-leaf stew, often to a soundtrack of soukous and Congolese rumba. Prices stay low and turnover on fresh arrivals is quick, which is why regulars from well beyond the neighbourhood make the trip for ingredients they can't find elsewhere.
