Canada's 100 Best dropped its annual bar rankings this week, and Montreal had a very good day.
Eight bars from the city landed in the top 50—the strongest showing of any city outside Toronto, which placed 17 bars on the list but couldn't hold the top spot.
That top spot belongs to Cloakroom, the 25-seat cocktail room tucked behind a menswear boutique in the Golden Square Mile. There, co-owner and mixologist Andrew Whibley has built a team trained to figure out what you want to drink, then build it from a library of house-made amari, custom liqueurs, low-temperature distillation tinctures, and a vintage spirits collection assembled over a decade.
In a moment when bars increasingly compete on spectacle and concept, the best bar in Canada is the one where nothing is on display except the craft.
