Umarell is finally coming together: arriving in a room with the good old bones of AYLA (RIP), it’s an idea that’s been carried around for the better part of six years by the team behind Mano Cornuto and Mano Figa. Now they’ll inject their own style of hospitality into the seam where Griffintown gives way to Little Burgundy with a neighbourhood wine bar unlike anything else in the area.

‘Umarell’ is the term for the retired Italian men who spend their afternoons observing construction sites, hands clasped behind their backs, known for offering commentary to the point of reaching municipal significance in Italy. Owner-operators Tyler Maher, Vito Ciocca, Alex Ragoussis, and executive chef James Baran latched onto it early, back when Griffintown was mostly cranes and their block was a permanent worksite. They made a cartoonish symbol for the umarell themselves, and it’s been on the wine glasses since day one.
