      Morning, Montreal.

      Well, we got you.

We had a good time in the office pitching April Fool's Day ideas to one another—rejects included the likes of "Nun's Island is declared the coolest neighbourhood in the world" , "A guide to the best QR code menus in Montreal", and the city unveiling a plan for a commemorative statue dedicated to the orange cone (which Heritage Montreal did a better version of)—but in the end, we couldn't resist that joke. Apologies for any palpitations it may have caused.

And now, while the fun and games are (sort of) over, it's back to work: We hope you'll enjoy the upcoming month of stories we have planned out, each giving you a new angle on the city you know and love. If you enjoy reading them as much as we loved writing and working on them with other writers, I hope you'll consider becoming a supporter.

Our coups de cœur this week:

One Story to Read This Week

Pâtisserie Trésors Sucrés is run by owner Smain and his wife, both Amazigh from Algeria. | Photograph: Rachel Holly Cheng / @rachelhollycheng

Petit Maghreb, the stretch of Jean-Talon between Saint-Michel and Pie-IX, has become one of the city's most vital micro-neighbourhoods since the 1990s, when Quebec's French-language immigration policies drew waves of Tunisian, Algerian, and Moroccan families to the city. Bakeries, halal butchers, cafés, and market stalls followed. So did community.

Rachel Cheng's portrait of the neighbourhood is the kind of piece that makes you want to get on the metro immediately, be it for the almond petit fours at Boulangerie Salem, the steak sandwich at Boucherie Classico for under $10, or just the feeling of a neighbourhood unlike any other.
