“What I feel most acutely is a homesickness for an older version of home.”
A colleague sent me this gem of a line by Monocle writer Colin Nagy this past week. It comes from an article on Californian train infrastructure, but it lands especially hard at a moment like this one because of what it echoes.
When Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered his viral speech at Davos, in the midst of the first trade pressures, tariffs, and economic coercion from the U.S. administration, he said: “We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn’t mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy.”
Which, these days, brings a quote from former President George W. Bush to mind: “There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”
