Josh Johnson’s requirements for a good day on tour are modest: an on-time flight and a city he likes. Montreal, at least, has the second part covered.
Johnson has visited for Just for Laughs and on his own time, drawn back by the food, music, and the pleasure of getting deliberately lost. This weekend, he returns with something considerably more organized: four performances of Comedy Band Camp at L’Olympia over two days.
It is the biggest production he has attempted. Stand-up shares the stage with live music and dance; audience members can take a personality test that assigns them to a camp troop. The concept reaches back to a childhood experience Johnson never had and has now constructed for everyone else—part summer camp, part jam session, with the comedian attempting to turn a theatre full of strangers into a temporary community.
