Montreal Has a Winter Identity. But Who Does It Belong To?

Our city has made winter an art form, so the next step is making sure everyone's invited to enjoy it.

Winter is Montreal’s longest-running season, and that makes it our largest public square.

At the same time, the arts are increasingly essential in reimagining how Montreal moves, gathers, and thrives in the cold months. They allow us to raise the bar for what public space can be, which is especially important when we sometimes need a moment to forget that these spaces aren’t always the most pleasant to be in during colder times of the year.

In winter placemaking, Montreal has become a reference point for our model for arts programming, interaction, and play. Just look at the Old Port, where Montrealers throw caution to the wind to party all night at Igloofest, or how a new city initiative has made three city streets car-free this past season.
