Japan has been solving the small-home problem for hundreds of years through a different set of priorities than folks in the roomier climes of Canada may recognize: storage that disappears into walls, rooms that serve multiple purposes, and an understanding that negative space is not wasted space. These design traditions have a lot to say for Montreal, where families are still trying to make century-old houses work for contemporary life, and where the standard renovation playbook doesn't always cut it.

The Plateau Kyoto Residence, completed last year by Montreal interior design studio Indee Design, draws on that tradition directly. The project began as a compartmentalized single-family home in the Plateau Mont-Royal with an antiquated layout and now emerges as something genuinely different: open without being empty, personal without being cluttered, and designed for the long term rather than the next sale.

Relocating the staircase changed everything. In the original layout, it contributed to the home's compartmentalized feel; repositioned, it freed up the ground floor to function as a single connected sequence from the living area through the dining room to the rear extension.

That extension is where the Japanese influence is most legible: a suspended bench floats in front of floor-to-ceiling glazing facing the garden, a built-in alcove holds a bonsai, and a maple shelving unit structures the wall into compartments that absorb storage, a concealed projector, and seating. The room reads as calm because everything has been accounted for.

The staircase itself is the project's most striking element. Fully enclosed in matte dark steel with perforated mesh panels and glass blocks at its base, it gives the home a converted loft feel. The glass blocks introduce light into what could have been a dead zone while keeping the structure from reading as purely industrial against the warmer maple tones around it.
