I’m seeing many amazing stories this past week: Deep dives into city identity, bold perspectives on food and culture in real time, a sweeping (and heartwarming) retrospective on Côte-des-Neiges… there’s even pizza omakase?

This city never ceases to surprise me.

And we hope you enjoy these stories even more now, because (classic Jimmy Wales-style segue incoming here) you may have noticed that we tried launching ads throughout the site. Maybe it’s the enshittification fatigue talking, but we couldn't stand the experience, and we got rid of them.

We're constantly trying things to help support our operations, and that includes expanding our team; we're eight strong now! That, and staying on top of the best of what’s happening in Montreal, takes a lot of resources. One Story to Read This Week

At some point, Little Burgundy's September Surf Café stopped being about surfing. That's the thing about a good café: it takes on a life of its own, and whatever sparked it can quietly get left behind. For Mitch Martin, that meant a small workshop tucked behind the counter — where he shaped boards by hand while the coffee poured out front — eventually becoming a kitchen. The surfboards got beached.

So he opened an off-site studio in Saint-Henri under the name Brainchild. He cuts Styrofoam, lays fiberglass, works through shapes he's been sitting on for years — boards built for the Montreal surfer who drives all day to reach the waves of Nova Scotia or Maine. Each one takes ten to fifteen hours. None of it is a business plan.

This week's story is about a founding idea that finally got its own room.

🏺Among Beetles and Blossoms brings together the work of three ceramicists at Poterie Foster, showcasing intricate textures and shapes of the natural world.

🎪 The Medieval Passion Fair concludes three days of gothic affairs, with performances, artisans, activities, and more.

🛍️ Montreal’s largest independent artisan market, Marche de printemps, wraps up. 100 different artisans, free entry, and coffee and pastries available on site.

🖼️ PHI exhibits Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s Otherworlds, which examines contemporary ecological realities through virtual, sonic, and video worlds.

The Heights of Design in Montreal

Twenty years after earning its UNESCO City of Design designation, Montreal is getting the design week to match. Running April 28 to May 7, the inaugural Montreal Design Week brings ten days of open studios, exhibitions, architecture walks, and product launches to more than 50 venues across the city. Its city-wide programming is free and accessible to everyone.

Design aficionados and industry professionals, take note: The Trade Show is where you’ll want to be on April 30, as 70 local and international exhibitors take over the Grand Quay of the Port of Montreal for a full day of panels, product showcases, and an evening cocktail.

This is Montreal's first design week. It won't be the last time these sell out fast.
