Last year, Tom Murphy's career changed with a single phone call. The Ottawa-born, Montreal-based comedian was preparing to perform as part of the Montreal Series when he received an unexpected call from Just For Laughs VP of Programming, Nick Brazao, asking if he'd like to join the festival's prestigious New Faces of Comedy showcase where the likes of Kevin Hart, Ali Wong, Amy Schumer, and Jimmy Fallon (to name a few) all had early career-defining appearances.
A year later, Murphy is back at Just For Laughs, once again performing as part of the Montreal Series at the Comedy Nest. But this homecoming comes with an added layer of emotion: after nearly a decade in the city, he's preparing to move to Austin, Texas. Ahead of his latest JFL appearance, we caught up with Murphy to talk about New Faces, finding his comedic voice, writing movies, and why Montreal's bread culture might be impossible to replace.
