The 8th edition of Les Lauriers de la gastronomie québécoise, a Montreal-based non-profit founded in 2018 to recognize and promote excellence in Quebec gastronomy, held its crowning Gala des Lauriers last night at the Centre Pierre-Péladeau’s Salle Pierre-Mercure. In what felt like a formal gala, the room was full and lively.
Danny St-Pierre hosted the evening, promising a faster awards ceremony than in previous editions so everyone can properly enjoy the rest of the evening. The jury is chaired by François-Emmanuel Nicol, chef and owner of the two-Michelin-starred Tanière3 in Quebec City.
St-Pierre’s opening remarks spoke warmly about passion and innovation, describing restaurants as homes and essential ecosystems, and that the Lauriers aim to establish a rigorous approach to highlighting culinary professions.
For his first address, François-Emmanuel Nicol adopts a more political tone, highlighting the importance of the Lauriers as a lever for Québec’s culinary culture and terroir. That’s why, according to him, he chose his jury by selecting professionals from different branches of the industry.
“Being Québécois is not measured by the size of the family tree, but by the depth of the roots,” he adds at the end of his speech.
In the winners’ speeches, one theme often comes up: creating a link between producers, artisans, and consumers to showcase local products.
Finally, a big announcement this year: The Lauriers de la Gastronomie Gala will take place in Quebec City next year and will alternate with Montreal every two years!
